Before we say goodbye: my words to Tsinghua

As another graduation season arrives, Tsinghua is filled with the familiar rhythm of farewells. Gowns flutter in the summer breeze, camera shutters click by the iconic gates, and laughter is often followed by quiet tears. It is a time of endings, but also of beginnings. This year, we asked our graduates a simple question:

If you could say one sentence to Tsinghua, what would it be?

Zhang Shang from the School of Environment said, "Thank you for challenging me, for shaping me, and for showing me what it means to serve a greater purpose. "

My most meaningful academic achievement was developing a globally applicable framework to quantify embedded plastic flows and their environmental impacts, which culminated in several publications and policy dialogues. On a personal level, I take pride in transforming a complex, underexplored topic into actionable insights that gained recognition from both the academic and policy communities. This journey—from concept to impact—reflects the values of curiosity, perseverance, and public purpose that Tsinghua instills in its students. After graduation, I will continue my journey at UNEP as an Associate Programme Officer in intergovernmental affairs. Tsinghua played a pivotal role in shaping this path—not just through academic training, but by nurturing a deep sense of responsibility to contribute to global sustainability.
